Ride Logs
Table of Contents
Feature Overview
The Ride Logs screens provide a simple way for you to record information about your bicycle rides. It has the following features:
Ride Logs Menu
After you log in to the website, you will see a menu on the left side of the main website page called "Ride Logs". See below:
![]() ![]() Privacy Settings
When you first start using Ride Logs, you should set your privacy settings. After logging on to the website, select "My Privacy Settings" from the Ride Logs Menu. You will see the following screen:
The default privacy setting is "All other HBC Members can view my Ride Logs". This means that other members, after they log in, can select your name from a drop down box and view the ride logs that you enter. It also means that the summary screen "Member Miles YTD" will display your name along with the total miles you have logged year-to-date.
If you would prefer to keep your ride logs private to only yourself, or your designated "friends", click on the drop down box and select "Only People I list as Friends can view my Ride Logs". Don't forget to click on the Save icon after you make this selection. After clicking Save, you should see the following screen:
Note that there is scrolling list of all the members of the Harrisburg Bicycle Club. If you would like to keep your ride logs private to only yourself, you are done setting your privacy settings. No one else will be able to see your ride logs, and your name will be displayed as "anonomous" on the "Member Miles YTD" screen (see below for more on that).
However if you would like to give one or more other members the ability to see your ride logs, scroll down on the list, click on their name, and then click on the Add button. Repeat this process for all your friends. Don't forget to click on the Save icon after making your selections.
The following screen shows an example where John Doe has been selected as a friend.
Add New Ride Log
To add a new ride log, select the "Add New Ride Log" menu selection from the Ride Logs menu. You will see the following screen:
NOTE: the first time you use this feature, your name will not appear in the top selection box - it will probably say "Select User". That is OK - you can only add logs for yourself - so it doesn't matter what that selection box says. After you enter your first log, your name will now appear in the drop down selection box.
All the fields are optional, however there's not much point in this if you don't at least record the miles! Note that the Event field is integrated into the website calendar, so any events that were on the calendar for the day you are recording the ride will appear in the drop down box. After you make all your entries don't forget to click on the Save icon!.
View Ride Logs
To view either your ride logs or other member's ride logs, click on the View Ride Logs selection from the Ride Logs menu. You will be presented with the following screen:
Note that when you click on the Miles shown for any day, it will take you to a new screen which displays the detail of the logs for that day.
Detail View
Edit or Delete a Log
As shown, you can also edit the existing ride logs (for yourself only) are add new entries from this screen. When you select the "Edit" button you will see the following screen:
View by Week
Following is the view if you select "See by Week".
On the screen shown above see the "switch to graph view" link? That link appears on the Add New Ride Log and View Ride Log screens. Clicking on this link will take you to this screen which will allow you to see your totals graphically:
Graph View
Experiment with the different graph display settings. The two "y-axis" settings that you'll probably find most useful are the "Distance (miles)" and "Avg Speed". Note that the Avg Speed is an average of all your average speeds for the given day, month or year. Export
The Ride Log Export feature provides an ability to download a copy of all your ride logs to your personal computer. It is provided in a "comma delimited" file, also called a "CSV" file.
When you click on the "Export Logs to CSV" menu item, you will first be presented with this dialog box - to either Open With or Save File:
Then you will see this dialog box to pick a folder on your PC and save the file:
After the file is saved, you can use Excel to open up the file and further manipulate or just keep for your records. When opening up in Excel, make sure to change the "Files of type" to "Text Files" as shown below.
Member Miles YTD
Access the Member Miles YTD screen by making that selection on the Ride Logs menu. You will see the following screen:
Note that this screen will be accessible by the general public (will not require log-in to the website to see).
