The Role of the Sweep

The Sweep is a trusted HBC rider that rides at the back of the group making sure all riders are accounted for.  The Sweep is vital to the safety of a large group.   The ride leader can only see a few riders behind him/her.  A Sweep ensures the group stays together because the leader only needs to keep track of one person – the Sweep.  The Sweep should carry a whistle and use it to signal the leader if any problems arise.  If available, the Sweep should obtain a copy of the route and wear an HBC reflective vest.  Volunteer to sweep when needed and help keep the group together and safe!
