A beautiful sunny evening enticed 11 cyclists to head southeast out of Hershey past the Milton Hershey School Alumni Hall onto Old Hershey road through rolling farmlands towards Elizabethtown. After passing the Conewago Trail, facing the long, steep climb into Etown we turned left onto Beverly Road, carefully crossing Route 743, onto Koser Road, Mapledale Road, Bellaire Road, Brandt Road, Bachmanville and Schoolhouse Road before entering Campbelltown. We continued 2 miles north onto Lingle Road before turning west onto the "ground down" pavement on Route 322 for a few hundred feet before taking the fork onto a lightly trafficked East Derry Road, riding past the Hershey Country Club. We then paused at the intersection of Laudermilch Road and Hershey Park Drive to note the ghost bike that memorializes the location where Taylor Childs was killed riding home from work on her bike. We turned up for our longest climb of the evening up Swatara Road and then down its wonderful downhill proceeding along Boat House Road on our way back to Briarcrest Square. This is one of those rides that felt like there were few climbs spending most of the time gliding speedily along. In fact we climbed 1,338 feet. It was a most enjoyable evening for a bike ride. Thanks to Joanne Martin for tending the flock as our sweep.
