Seventy people attended the HBC January General Membership meeting to learn about advocacy and the PA laws on cycling.  After a brief HBC business portion of the meeting four prominent special guest speakers were introduced.

Bicycle South Central PA President Richard Norford, an avid bicyclist involved in improving local riding conditions. He aims to "make our communities a better place to live, to work, to shop and to play, and not just for advanced bike riders but all ages, both genders, regardless of where they live or work."   He presented statistics on cycling in our area including benefits for our health and for our community.  He is also challenging us to improve our health and care for our environment by committing to not using our cars for 150 days a year.  He asks that instead we do simple errands on our bicycles.

Camp Hill Boro Police Officer Chad Tate, a cyclist who has also raced and understands both the law and the cyclists mentality discussed how to protect your bike from getting stolen, what to do in a motor vehicle/bicycle altercation, the points system, traffic signals, what happens if you get pulled over and much more.  There were many questions directed to him from the attendees.

PA State Representative Parke Wentling, an avid cyclist who races competitively and has journeyed across the country twice on the TransAmerica Trailalso spoke.  He discussed some of the improvements that have taken place in the state of PA for cycling and he has an interest in and works on rail networks and Rails-to-Trails projects.

Long time Harrisburg Lobbyist and founder of the Keystone Transportation Funding CoalitionGeorge Wolff spoke about what is happening right now in legislation and what we can do to get involved.  He emphasized bicycles and pedestrians (walking) ARE transportation, not just recreation.

HBC attendees received an HBC safety vest and Jeff Hoch answered questions on navigating our website before the meeting.

Join us February 10th for our next General Membership meeting on Injury Prevention with Guest Speaker Dr. White from Aspire Medical.  Thirty minutes before the meeting from 6:30 – 7 PM Jeff Hoch will be available to answer any questions about navigating our HBC website.  The meeting is open to all.  See you there!
